It held its first meetings in London that summer. On 4 May 1867 it came under the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons with a Warrant of Confirmation, keeping its number 1. It is regarded as the first regularly warranted Mark lodge in England, and it heads the numbered roll of Grand Lodge.

About the Lodge

Our Lodge

The Mother Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 1 is moored to St. Marks Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 1, and like every Royal Ark Mariner lodge it carries the number of its Mark lodge.

It was consecrated on 29 January 1872. The United Grand Lodge of England had left it out of the Union of 1813, and English Brethren who wanted the degree had to seek it elsewhere. In London the Bon Accord Mark Lodge had been meeting since 1851 under the authority of the Bon Accord Royal Arch Chapter of Aberdeen. In December 1855 the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland decided to grant warrants to lodges of Mark Masters working outside Scotland.

Member sign in

Enter the email address registered with the lodge. In England and Wales, and in its Districts and lodges overseas, it is governed by the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons from Mark Masons’ Hall, 86 St James’s Street, London.

The Mark degree

The ceremony of advancement is set during the building of King Solomon’s Temple. It centres on the marks that operative masons cut into their work so that it could be identified, inspected and paid for. The candidate takes the part of a Fellow Craft in the quarries. He learns about the honest work of the craftsman, about fair reward for labour, and about the stone that the builders rejected, which became the head of the corner. The motto of Grand Lodge, Lapis Reprobatus Caput Anguli, means just that.

What is Royal Ark Mariner?

The Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners is administered by the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, and its Grand Master is the Grand Master of the Mark. The degree is conferred only on Mark Master Masons. Each Royal Ark Mariner lodge is “moored” to a Mark lodge and carries the same number, usually with the same name.

The degree

The ceremony of elevation tells the story of the Great Flood and of Noah, who built the Ark by which mankind was preserved. The Worshipful Commander represents Noah, and his Wardens represent Noah’s sons, Japheth and Shem. Like the Craft and Mark degrees it draws on the Masonic allegory of building, but here it celebrates a builder who worked on God’s direct instructions, and the Ark as an “Ark of Safety”.
